Description
The Appomattox Campaign (March 29–April 9, 1865) was the final Civil War series of engagements in Virginia, where Union General Ulysses S. Grant pursued and trapped Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s starving Army of Northern Virginia. After falling at Petersburg and Richmond, Lee fled west toward Lynchburg, but Union forces blocked his escape at Appomattox Court House, forcing his surrender on April 9, 1865.
